Editorial Review

Johanna Basford’s books are hugely popular and always well-reviewed, and this book is no different. World of Flowers is a gorgeous book filled with enough designs to keep any colourist happy for many rainy afternoons. The designs are charming, varied, interesting and well-composed.

It’s focused on flowers, but things like garden tools, old-fashioned trucks and even Beatles’ images keep the book from feeling monotonous. There are some abstract flowers, but those who like colouring flowers that look like specific species won’t be disappointed.

There are a couple of fold-out pages and some double-page spreads for those who want a bigger project, but busy artists will also find a number of smaller images that take less time and attention to complete. The book features high-quality, cream-coloured paper with enough tooth for layering. Basford recommends pencils over pens for this book, but users report success in many different media.

What Others Are Saying

This book is a favourite with many colourists, even colourists who’ve collected all of Basford’s works. People felt that the designs were detailed without being too difficult. Many noted that while some of the artwork in her other books tended to be so fine that the images could be tedious to finish, World of Flowers had found a better balance between detail and simplicity.

They also loved the sheer variety of the designs. A lot of reviewers mentioned that they had been skeptical when they bought a colouring book entirely about flowers, but that the designs were creative enough that they never got bored.

Users often noted that since the pages are double-sided, there are some limitations – alcohol-based markers and watercolours don’t work well in this book. They also didn’t love having to pick one side of the page to frame. There were also complaints about poorly glued bindings that came apart without much provocation.

Editorial Review

This adult colouring book from Jade Summer is a great find for people who don’t love a lot of detail in their colouring books. These lovely designs are simple without being childish or boring, and there’s still a lot of variety in the designs.

The pages are full, and while the designs are open and simple, there’s enough substance to them to make the projects feel worthwhile to complete. Wreaths, vase arrangements, single flowers, birds and butterflies add interest to the patterns.

With high-quality, durable paper and single-sided images, the pages work with a range of media, and there’s less worry about bleed-through.

The larger drawings are a bonus for those who are vision impaired, while the larger page size is a relief for those whose hands and joints get cramped when working in tiny spaces. The lack of detail is also nice for those who simply prefer to add the details themselves.

What Others Are Saying

People who used this book loved the simplicity and felt it let them be as creative as they wanted, adding details if they felt like it or following the designs given if they just wanted to relax and enjoy the activity. Many people bought this book as a gift for older friends or family members who wanted to stay creative but who struggled with colouring books that were too intricate.

Reviewers often noted that the paper was high quality and could handle heavy colour and lots of layering. They especially appreciated the digital book so that they could print multiple copies of an image if they wanted to colour it multiple times.

Reviews of this book were typically positive, but a few people thought the designs were oversimplified. Users sometimes noted that a different, spiral binding would have made the book easier to colour in. There were also some users who wished that the pages had been perforated for easier removal.

The Bottom Line

We hope this inspires you to check out these (and other) adult flower colouring books and to capture the beauty of flowers for yourselves on those rainy days.

Happy colouring!

Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson’s love affair with flowers started in her grandmother’s northern Ontario garden, where she learned to care for her grandmother’s collection of annuals. She now works as a writer and editor in a small Ontario town and practices her floral craft at every opportunity, recently by creating bouquets for her friends’ weddings. Her favourite flowers are peonies, and despite the hints of others, she refuses to believe that she has too many of them in her gardens.
